A classmate, Sachin Chat added, “This course was valuable for the cost and learning was a joyful experience. I have attended many academic and professional courses in the past but I feel this course is the best one I have ever seen.”

1ST RUTGERS MINI-MBA GLOBAL GRADUATION
Perhaps no program in Rutgers history better exemplifies RU’s motto “Jersey roots, Global reach” than the Mini-MBA that the Center for Management Development (CMD) just completed with TNT. This global logistics firm flew in 17 individuals from North America, South America, and the Middle East over the last year to take part in the intensive program where our top professors were matched with TNT’s senior leaders as instructor.
The Mini MBA™: Business Essentials certificate program delivered in three residential sessions over the past year, culminated on Tuesday night with a special graduation ceremony complete with custom TNT regalia, lots of scarlet and black decorations, and a speech from the Division CEO Mark Gunton. TNT’s extraordinary commitment to developing their managers was perhaps best summed up by one of the Mini-MBA participants, Scott Hall, who wrote to Mark, “Let me thank you again for the Rutgers opportunity. Given the economic environment, the continuation of this program was a remarkable decision for you to make. It speaks to your dedication to us. Let me assure you that dedication will be reciprocated.” The overall initiative was sponsored and organized by Joe Schaffer, head of HR and a Rutgers graduate of the Masters of Human Resource Management.
NEW Mini-MBA: STRATEGIC MARKETING KICKS OFF IN FEBRUARY 2010
CMD is pleased to add Strategic Marketing to its suite of Mini-MBA programs starting in 2010. At the core of every business is the need to obtain, grow and retain customers. The marketing function has always been concerned with understanding and delivering value to customers. This has never been more vital than in today’s highly competitive, global environment. Today’s leading firms are those that can infuse the marketing function of placing the customer at the center of all business decisions within their entire organization.
This executive course was developed as an extension to the Mini-MBA: Business Essentials program. While the Mini-MBA: Business Essentials program contains a 3 hour marketing module, the marketplace is demanding that executives in all fields and disciplines have a deeper knowledge and understanding of marketing tools and concepts. This new exciting program, taught through 12 modules, allows participants, regardless of their background and functional role, to think like marketers and to return to their firm with a mindset to innovate for generating customer value.
Whether you are looking to update your current marketing skills, switch to a career in marketing, or to move up within your organization, this Mini MBA program will help you succeed.

This course is designed to lift professionals out of their organizational silos and expose them to the entire process – from drug discovery to commercialization. The program aims to provide the background and business skills required for innovation in these industries, while also challenging participants to consider new business paradigms that promote sustainable revenue growth, stakeholder cooperation and cost management. The goal of the program is to provide participants with the tools to bring scientific innovation to the marketplace with sustainable success. This is accomplished employing a case study format to engage participants in problem solving and analysis of key issues in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industries. Course modules examine such topics as making strategic business decisions in drug development; legal and regulatory issues; the industry in the global context; understanding the marketplace; supply-chain development; strategic alliances and acquisitions; and business ethics and social responsibility. Rutgers CMD launches Mini MBA: Strategic Healthcare Management at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, NJ
The Rutgers University Center for Management Development was commissioned by Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick to create a Mini MBA™ in Strategic Healthcare Management for medical residents in the hospital’s internal medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics and gynecology residency programs. After meeting with Saint Peter’s physician leaders and administrators, Rutgers CMD designed a course that integrates strategic management of a healthcare facility with business concepts that address the pressing issues faced by medical and administrative healthcare practitioners today.
Medical residents enrolled in our country’s medical education system learn about the science and art of medicine, but they are not likely to be taught about the business of medicine. As the healthcare crisis continues to grow in the United States, it is important for today’s physicians to understand the economic and financial impacts of health care in our country.
How is medicine paid for and who pays for it? How does Medicare work, and how does our payer system influence patient outcomes? Why are more than 45 million Americans uninsured? Health care is big business, and today’s physicians must be business savvy. Physicians as well as healthcare practitioners who have business knowledge will succeed in their careers and practices.
This unique 13-week, 48-hour course takes both a current and far-reaching look at the healthcare industry, covering topics such as understanding local market dynamics, reimbursement, financial analysis and management, ethics, integrated business models and healthcare globalization trends. It was taught on-site at Saint Peter’s to accommodate participants’ demanding schedules in the Fall/Winter of 2008.
Though initially intended as a “grass roots” course for Saint Peter’s second- and third-year medical residents, it evolved to include both staff and community physicians as well as hospital administrators—a unique development in course design.
The main drive behind this program was to help physicians and hospital administrators make more informed decisions. By taking people out of their silos and putting them into interdisciplinary teams we exposed participants to a cross-current of new ideas Hospital administrators were exposed to physicians’ thought processes, and, conversely, physicians were exposed to the challenges hospital administrators deal with every day. The cross-pollination of ideas that occurred during the sessions was invaluable.
Participants who completed the program received a Mini MBA Certificate handed out by the CEO of Saint Peters. Those who passed a written examination also earned three elective credits towards a Rutgers MBA, Masters in Human Resource Management or a Masters in Business and Science.
This unique career and competency development program will be introduced as a public program in 2009. For information on this program, including in-house delivery, contact Dr. Claudia Meer at meer@cmd.rutgers.edu or 732/445-5590.
New workshops added to the Strategic Human Resource Management Certificate for 2009…
We are pleased to announce the addition three new programs to our suite of workshops offered in the Strategic Human Resource Management Certificate program:
Building an Ethical Organization* – The importance of ethics in organizations continues to gain importance in today’s business environment. This workshop will explore the consequences of ethical and unethical behavior as factors that influence how individual and organizations act.
Improving Motivation and Job Satisfaction – A company’s success is dependent on the efforts of its employees. In this program, we will explore the factors that are responsible for producing employee motivation and job satisfaction.
Diversity Initiatives for HR Professionals – A broad definition of diversity will form the basis of this workshop (e.g., race-ethnicity, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, etc.) and will provide an in-depth exposure to various techniques for establishing a work climate that will be supportive of employee diversity.
*Building an Ethical Organization can also be found in the Employment Law Certificate program and will count as 1 unit towards the completion of this program as well.
